Julian Siegel Jazz Orchestra. TALES FROM THE JACQUARD

Derby Jazz

In 2017, Derby Jazz commissioned new music from Julian Siegel for an all new Jazz Orchestra. With Lottery funds from Arts Council Grants for the Arts Derby Jazz produced a and a six date tour for the JSJO taking in Birmingham, Derby, Lincoln, Leicester, Ronnie Scotts and Nottingham. The Nottingham concert was later broadcast by BBC Radio 3 JAZZ NOW and in Denmark and Switzerland. The music the Orchestra played on its first UK Tour featured Julian's new music for Jazz Orchestra, from re-imaginings and expansions of his music for small bands to a new piece commissioned by Derby Jazz specially for this tour. 'TALES FROM THE JACQUARD' drew inspiration from the lacemaking process and the Jacquard cards, which controlled the lace knitting machines. (Julian's parents and family ran a lace manufacturing business in Nottingham's lace market for 50 years). Julian documented his research into Jacquard lace machines and the creative process he used to develop this research into music through his blogs. Plans are afoot for JSJO to release a CD of this music in 2020-21. You can see a video recording of "Tales from the Jacquard" on the VIDEOS page of this website.
