In 2017, Derby Jazz commissioned Julian Siegel to create an all new Jazz Orchestra, to write or arrange enough of his own music to fill a full concert programme and to tour the Julian Siegel Jazz Orchestra to Derby, Birmingham, Nottingham, Leicester, Lincoln and London (Ronnie Scotts). The Nottingham concert was later broadcast by BBC Radio 3 JAZZ NOW and in Denmark and Switzerland.

The music the Orchestra played on its first UK tour featured Julian's new music for Jazz Orchestra, from re-imaginings and expansions of his music for small bands and a completely new piece commissioned by Derby Jazz specially for this tour. 'TALES FROM THE JACQUARD' drew inspiration from the lacemaking process and the Jacquard cards, which controlled the lace knitting machines. (Julian's parents and family ran a lace manufacturing business in Nottingham's lace market for 50 years). Julian documented his research into Jacquard lace machines and the creative process he used to develop this research into music through his blogs.

This project was made possible by Lottery funds from Arts Council Grants for the Arts.
