Derby Jazz-EMJAZZ / Zerozerojazz-Padova Jazz Festival Exchange
An artist exchange project between Derby Jazz and Padova Jazz Festival (2014-15) which saw Phil Robsons Organ Trio and The Christine Tobin Trio play at the Padova Jazz Festival in November 2014 and Greg Burk's Expanding Trio playing for Derby Jazz and at Ronnie Scott's in September 2015.
This project started during Derby Jazz Week in March 2007 when Italian jazz animateurs Enzo Carpentieri and Sara Pazzato of ZeroZero Jazz and the Abano Jazz Festival attended several Derby Jazz Week concerts as guests of Derby Jazz. Among the artist they saw Partisans and Christine Tobin left a particularly strong impression. That summer Geoff Wright and Charmian Kayes of Derby Jazz were guests of ZeroZero Jazz at a festival they organised on Abano Terme near Padova. Later that year Enzo and Sara were back in the UK for The London Jazz Festival where they saw "Derby Day" at The Barbican which included; Graham Collier with Harry Beckett and The East Midlands Youth Jazz Orchestra, Phil Robsons Six Strings and The Beat and Corey Mwamba Quintet.
Over the years we kept in touch and talked about artist exchanges but largely because of the financial crisis nothing really jelled until 2013 when Enzo and Sara were asked to manage the 2014 Padova Jazz Festival and arranged a meeting between Geoff Wright, who was in Venice for The Biennale, and Gabriella Piccolo Casiraghi of "The Cultural Miles" who organise the Padova Jazz Festival.
A year later Geoff was in Padova to see Phil' trio and Christine's band being very well received at the Padova Jazz Festival and to see a fine set by Greg Burk's Expanding Trio.
The relationship between Derby Jazz-EMJAZZ and ZERZEROJAZZ-Padova Jazz Festival has been already been seven years in the making and we hope has the potential for more collaborations and exchanges in the future.
