Black Top, the duo of multi-instrumentalist Orphy Robinson and pianist Pat Thomas, is a shape-shifting unit dedicated to exploring the intersection between live instruments and lo-fi technology. Their vibrant and visceral music is deeply rooted in the diversity of black music and a perfect celebration of BLACK HISTORY MONTH
They are firm favourites at London's Cafe OTO, one of the world's hippest boho/jazz clubs. Their virtuoso, freely improvised performances combine twisted loops, samples and dub-effects, which draw on their Afro-Caribbean roots, with a spontaneity and daring rooted in experimental free-jazz.
Though a duo BLACK TOP usually play with a guest. This time they've invited XHOSA COLE to join them. Since being crowned BBC Young Jazz Musician 2018, Xhosa Cole has gone on to win Jazz Newcomer of the Year in the 2019 Parliamentary Jazz Awards, and the Jazz FM Breakthrough Act of the Year Award in 2020. The Birmingham saxophonist has performed with groups such as the Jazzlines Ensemble and his own quartet: the CharCole Collective.
Previous Black Top guests have included; Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Steve Coleman, Hamid Drake, William Parker, Peter Evans and Shabaka Hutchings.
