"Dazzling music, fresh yet respectful..worth doing? Certainly. Worth buying? For sure" **** Peter Vacher, JAZZWISE
MJQ Celebration brings together some of the UK's most aclaimed jazz musicians; Jim Hart on vibes, Barry Green on piano, Matt Ridley on bass and Steve Brown on drums, to pay homage to one of the greatest jazz ensembles of all time, MJQ the "Modern Jazz Quartet". Stellar favourites such as "Django", "The Golden Striker", "Bag's Groove" and "Concorde" are given enthralling new renditions, whilst staying true to the original intentions of their composers John Lewis and Milt Jackson. MJQ Celebration has toured the UK and played sell out shows at prestigious venues such as the Purcell Room and Ronnie Scott's.Their eponymous album was released in April 2014 and gained universal praise from critics and audiences alike.
A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM GEOFF WRIGHT "Seeing MJQ in Birmingham Town Hall in the early 1960s was one of my earliest jazz experiences. Still much to young to get into bars and clubs my live jazz was restricted to concerts at the Town Hall and Odeon Cinema on New Street. Around that time I also saw The John Dankworth Orchestra featuring the "young Canadian trumpet player Kenny Wheeler", the Gerry Mulligan/Bob Brookmeyer Quartet and The Woody Herman Big Band at the Town Hall and Louis Armstrong and the Duke Ellington Orchestra at the Odeon. The Modern Jazz Quartet was a standout. Something about the clarity of their sound, those great tunes and Milt Jackson's stillness on stage while the others played before he stepped forward and struck a golden chord that seemed to float around the cavernous Town Hall like a cloud. I can't wait to hear those tunes played live in Derby.
