ORPHY ROBINSON ALL STARS presents the BOBBY HUTCHERSON SONGBOOK. The renowned USA vibes player Bobby Hutcherson died aged 65 in August 2016 after a glittering career that started in the late 1950s. He played with the Who’s Who of jazz icons, recording on Blue Note from 1963 to 1977. Bobby ran the gambit from bebop, via post bop to contemporary and free jazz. In September 2016 Orphy Robinson, a Blue Note artist in his own right and co-leader of the hugely acclaimed BLACKTOP assembled an All-star band to pay homage to Bobby Hutcherson, with a performance voted by the public the “Live Experience Of The Year” at the April 2017 Jazz Fm Awards. Richard Williams, The Artistic Director of The Berlin Jazz Festival and internationally acclaimed jazz writer was at that Church of Sound award-winning concert. Earlier in his career he edited Time Out and Melody Maker and was head of A&R for Island Records. He’s been at more great gigs than almost anyone on the planet and he really rated this band. "Orphy Robinson must have known he’d had a great idea when he put together an octet to celebrate the music of the late Bobby Hutcherson at the church of St James the Great in Hackney on Thursday night... Kofi came close to blowing the doors off the place every time he took a solo. Orphy unleashed dazzling cross-hatched patterns of melody that skittered around the vaulted ceiling. Mitchell played one lengthy solo — on “8/4 Beat”, I think — of such ferocious emotional intensity that it threatened to melt his small electronic keyboard..” RICHARD WILLIAMS The BLUE MOMENT
