Mark Trounson has gained Arts Council Grants for The Arts support for this exciting tour that brings together two New York heavyweights and three of the best of the UK new wave. Bill McHenry on tenor saxophone, one of the most unique and idiosyncratic players of the instrument to emerge in the last 30 years. Bill made his name performing in New York in the 1990s, emerging out of the fertile scene that established itself around Smalls Jazz Club. As a leader he has released 7 albums as well as collaborations with Andrew Cyrille, Ben Monder and John McNeil. As a sideman he has recorded with Guillermo Klein, Reid Anderson, Chris Lightcap, Eric Revis, Rebecca Martin and Ethan Iverson amongst others. He recorded three albums between 2003 and 2011 with the late Paul Motian on drums, and performed extensively with this same quartet at the Village Vanguard. The tour will feature Bill's original compositions and his highly original take on standards, performed by a group that blends the experience of two seasoned American jazz musicians and three emerging talents on the UK jazz scene. The quintet also features UK based American jazz drummer Jeff Williams. Since moving to the UK a decade ago, Jeff has become one of the most in demand players in the country. His time on the New York scene since the 1970s has included long stints with Dave Liebman, Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano and Stan Getz. Jeff is also a long time playing partner of Bill McHenry, having toured the UK together back in 2005 and with several record dates together from their time in New York. The rest of the band features Tom Barford on tenor saxophone, Tom Ollendorff on guitar and Mark Trounson on bass, all emerging artists on the jazz scene in the UK. Tom Barford was selected from all graduating students of the Royal Academy of Music in 2017 to be awarded the 2017 Kenny Wheeler Jazz Prize, with the prize granting him a record deal with Edition Records, with whom he will release his debut album in 2018.
