British-Asian clarinettist and composer Arun Ghosh makes a welcome return to Derby Jazz, performing music from new album, But Where Are You Really From? The new album heralds a musical shift towards song-like structures and psychedelic textures. Fluidly and instinctively incorporating jazz, rock, folk, South-Asian, hip-hop and ambient styles, But Where Are You Really From? expresses Arun's unique and multi-faceted musical, emotional and cultural identity. Propelled by driving drums and multi-layered guitar, Arun's melodic outpourings and freewheeling improvisations become passionate, intensely charged 'songs without words'. With Liran Donin's hypnotic and interweaving basslines, and Chris Williams' alto exhortations added to the mix, the resulting sound is at once contemporary and primal, thought-provoking yet dancefloor friendly, and always communicative, accessible and all-embracing. "…uproarious and irresistible" - Daily Telegraph "Life-affirming music that transcends cultural barriers." - Manchester Evening News "…an upfront mix of South Asian melodies and western street-grooves…" - The Guardian "...extraordinary charisma and musicianship and a consistently riveting compositional skill" - Jazzwise "What is this fiery music and where does it come from?" - Metro
