Claus StÃ¶tter began learning his instrument at the age of ten, and this process is still going on, itâ€™s his opinion. He studied classical trumpet at the University of Stuttgart. He is a jazz autodidact. In 1982, together with his trio â€œJazz Vision,â€ he won the first prize at the Baden-WÃ¼rttemberg competition â€œJugend jazzt.â€ In early years he founded the own band â€œNeverthelessâ€ for which he wrote all compositions and played at many jazz festivals such as Jazzfest Berlin. In 1990, StÃ¶tter was distinguished with the Baden-WÃ¼rttemberg Jazz Award. One year later he was invited as a member of the Orchestre National de Jazz and until 1995 he was a member of this orchestra. He has been solo trumpeter of the NDR Big Band in Hamburg since 1999 and played together with such stars as Wayne Shorter, Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau, McCoy Tyner, Carla Bley, Maria Schneider, Dave Holland, Abdullah Ibrahim. He also worked with Jean Marie Machado, Hans Koller, Laura MacDonald, Glasgow, Rainer Tempel, Gabriel Coburger, Albert Mangelsdorff or with the bandfrom Michael Gibbs, together with Bill Frisell and Steve Swallow. 1989 â€“ 2006 he was an instructor in jazz trumpet at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts and since 2008 he teaches at the University of Music Hamburg.
