Yots K "The punk
Shirley Bassey of jazz"
Buddha Jee, Queen Street, Derby DE1 3DJ

|
Yots.K: vocals Jonathan Gee: piano Tom Bunting: bass Dave Rose: drums
|
|
As an Afro-Grecian living in London, Yots.K has a rich mix of influences to draw
from - from the Greek rebetika, so close to the American blues, to Latin and
African pulsations. She progressed from Elvis to admiring a range of early jazz
singers and musicians, in particular Nina Simone, Sarah Vaughan, Dizzy Gillespie
and Miles Davis.
Today, Yots.K's inspirations come from closer to home, namely the lush,
diverse talent she hears in the current British jazz scene, thrilling music
right here on our doorstep that tips its hat to the legends of American jazz
while bursting with its own energy and distinctive identity.

"The term 'chamber jazz' has a slightly frosty ring to it, but the
small-scale music of this excellent little band is as warm and inviting as
any jazz lover could wish. The absence of drums gives it intimacy, and the
relaxed pace lends a feeling of expansiveness and ease. It would be hard to find a more well-matched trio. The interplay
among them is unfailingly ingenious without descending into needless
complexity." Dave Gelly

samples and jazz improvisation, they revisit the electronic stew
that characterized one of Miles' most creative groups.
