Helen McDonald and her Band
Five Lamps, 25 Duffield Road, Derby
(01332) 341066
It's more than two years since Helen last played for Derby Jazz and that's far too long.
A few years back Helen's band Juba had a big following in Derby and Nottingham.
Since then her jazz spirit has flowed through all sorts of work in London and further afield.
Recent work in Germany, Italy and Guyana came after projects in Ghana, gigs at the Columbia Jazz Festival and
the Glastonbury Jazz Stage and work with Roy Ayers, Keith Waithe, the Macusi Players, Andy Hamilton and David Murray.

Dave Newton Trio
Darwin Suite, Derby Assembly Rooms
Dave Newton - piano, Matt Miles - bass, Steve Brown - drums
Described by John Dankworth as 'a national treasure' Dave Newton made his recording debut back in 1986 with
the legendary clarinettist Buddy DeFranco, a man who had played with Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson and Count Basie.
That magic lineage is carried on in Dave's playing and it's still got that sound of
surprise so essential to the best jazz.
He is Stacy Kent's regular pianist and has often worked with Annie Ross, Carol Kidd
and Claire Martin.

Wednesday 30th November 2005 7pm Metro Cinema, Green Lane, Derby
Jazz at the Cinema
The Metro Cinema opened on Green Lane in 1981 and has been central to Derby¹s
cultural life for nearly as long as Derby Jazz. Following the
success of EARTH with Jan Kopinski¹s live music last May we started
planning this fuller evening of film and jazz:
Alfred Hitchcock's Blackmail (75 mins)
The rare original 1929 silent film, which is generally considered to be
a better version than the later remake.
With live music by Cipher:
Theo Travis (saxophone, flute, piano, keyboards, samples)
Dave Sturt (bass, programming, samples, loops).

Walt Shaw - Entropic
Derby Dance Centre Box Office: (01332) 370911
Walt Shaw's latest work integrates live music, installation and contemporary dance. Performed by Graham Foster
- stick, electronics, physical performance, Sarah Duff and Nick Parry - dancers, Sophia Lycouris - dancer, artist,
choreographer and Walt Shaw - percussion, electronics and physical performance. Within an underlying structure,
the piece incorporates major elements of musical, sound and choreographic improvisation. The performance moves
from tight order to chaos, and back to order again. Or does it?

THOMAS---TURNER---WARD TRIO
Five Lamps,25 Duffield Road, Derby
Pat Thomas - keyboard and electronics, Roger Turner -
drums and percussion, Alex Ward - clarinet.
Roger Turner's previous Derby dates; with Alan Silva,
Konk Pack and Mats Gustafsson have all delivered jaw dropping
ensemble improvisation. Pat Thomas is another improviser whose Derby
dates, including the Mats Gustafsson date with Roger Turner have
always been special. Alex Ward is new to Derby but his work with
Derek Bailey, Eugene Chadbourne and Thurston Moore is all top stuff.
High risk, pulse based, quick witted improv.

Clare Hirst Quartet
THE VOICEBOX Forman Street, Derby
Saxophonist Clare Hirst has written and played on many recordings with artists as diverse as David Bowie,
The Communards and Mica Paris but jazz has always been her true love. Recently she joined forces with pianist and singer Hilary Cameron,
Tom Herbert on bass and drummer Dave Smith to form a quartet dedicated to giving great songs the classic jazz treatment.
We think the first class grand piano and intimate acoustic of The VoiceBox will be ideally suited to this quartet's
subtle music.

Mick Hutton's Boat Rockers
Darwin Suite, Derby Assembly Rooms
Mick Hutton - steel pans and keyboards, Andy Panayi - saxes and flute, Gary Hammond - percussion,
Arnie Somogyi - bass, Mark Edwards - piano,
Paul Robinson - drums.
One of the finest bass players in jazz - working with Bill Bruford, Django Bates and Alan Skidmore
- Mick Hutton has now emerged as a composer and bandleader with this all-star band.
Andy Panayi, Arnie Somogyi, Mark Edwards and Gary Hammond are all familiar on the jazz
scene. Paradoxically the phenomenal drummer Paul Robinson is less well-known in the UK because he had been touring the world as
Nina Simone's drummer from 1984 until her death in 2003.

333 (Trois-Three-Tres)
Five Lamps, 25 Duffield Road, Derby
Trois-Three-Tres is the brainchild of Mexican-American bass
guitarist Miguel Gonzales and French saxophonist Bruno Viala. Bruno
has a background in jazz, Miguel in blues and soul both were
interested in funk and improvisation. With the addition of UK
drummer John Rowland, the groove was instantaneous. Three musicians,
three cultures, one music...
The ideal band to launch our NEW VENUE.

Joshua Blackmore Sextet
SUSUMI, The Wardwick
A year ago Joshua Blackmore was a music student at Derby College and
drummer with Derby band Midnight Blue. He has now just finished the
first
year of the jazz course at London's Royal Academy of Music
where he is studying alongside the other members of this outstanding
young band.
We had to cancel this band's scheduled Derby Jazz Week show because Joshua was offered
a two week tour of Japan, but we didn't want to miss out
on the chance to promote this
exceptionally talented sextet playing Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and originals in a similar vein.

Trevor Watts / Jamie Harris Duo
Derby Dance Centre Theatre, Chapel Street, Derby
|
|
Trevor Watts alto & soprano saxes & Jamie Harris percussion and voice.
Trevor and Jamie have been working together now since around 1999. In 2005
the duo will be playing in Latin America, USA, New Zealand &
Australia as well as Europe. The music of the duo has now become a
distillation of the processes Trevor started to evolve originally
through the innovations and development of "free
improvisation" in the 60's alongside John Stevens, Evan Parker
and Derek Bailey right through to his multi cultural "Afro/European"
Moire Music Drum Orchestra in the 80's & 90's and more recently the Celebration
Band. This smaller and more concise context has given Jamie and
Trevor much more room for self expression. Jamie is emerging as
one of the best and most creative percussionists in Europe and a
great singer as well! A very sympathetic and supportive player and
totally dedicated to the music. Currently he is the perfect foil for
Trevor!
