Jim Mullen's Organ Trio
SUSUMI, The Wardwick, Derby

Join us in celebrating a great year for Derby Jazz with our annual visit from the king of soul jazz guitar Jim Mullen. After fifteen years and seven albums with the hugely successful Morrissey Mullen Band and countless tours with stars like Mose Allison, Jimmy Smith and Terry Callier there's not a groove on the planet that Jim hasn't mastered.

Wednesday November 3rd 2004
Loz Speyer's Inner Space Music
SUSUMI, The Wardwick, Derby
Saxophonist Chris Biscoe and drummer Seb Rochford both feature in trumpet player Loz Speyer's new quartet. Loz' previous visit to Susumi featured flaring solos on some very sophisticated original compositions. Well beyond the polite confines of neo-bop this is fire music in the tradition of Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman and Albert Ayler.

Wednesday October 27th 2004
Gilad Atzmon BeBop Quartet
Darwin Suite, Assembly Rooms, Derby
Gilad first burst onto the UK jazz scene as a searing player of bebop alto saxophone. Perhaps now more widely known for the music of his 'Orient House Ensemble' Gilad still carries a torch for the revolutionary music of Charlie Parker and Jackie McClean. An astonishing musician with a seemingly effortless ability to demolish and rebuild any old tune he decides to play' TIME OUT

Wednesday October 6th 2004
Alan Silva / Roger Turner
SUSUMI, The Wardwick, Derby
Yes this is the Alan Silva who played with Sun Ra, Albert Ayler and Cecil Taylor. He now lives in Paris, plays keyboards/electronics and works across Europe where one of his regular collaborators is drummer Roger Turner. A joyous sort of violence here, Turner brawling and bawling live duets in Silva's all night pinball arcade' CODA Magazine

Wednesday September 29th 2004
Julien Siegel Quartet
The Glasshouse, Derby Dance Centre

The release of this quartet¹s debut album 'Close Up' in 2002 established Julian as a remarkable writer and a powerful player. The band, which features three other major talents in pianist Liam Noble, bass player Jeremy Brown and drummer Gene Calderazzo, works  a fluent be-bop intensity into a fresh modern sound.

Saturday September 18th 2004
Walt Shaw 'Timepoints'
Derby Dance Centre Theatre, Chapel Street

Walt Shaw's new piece integrates visual art, sonic art, live percussion and physical performance. In exploring moments in time, our attempts to freeze time and the importance of the NOW it shares many concerns with
conventional jazz. Walt is working with dancer Sarah Duff for these performances which form part of Derby Dance Centre's Open Day.

Dave O'Higgins and Urban Connection
Darwin Suite, Assembly Rooms, Derby

Since galvanising the Norwegian jazz scene in the late 90s Urban Connection have gone on to win awards all over Europe. Their music combines traditional acoustic jazz forms with the energy of twenty-first century electonica.

This gig was part of the second UK tour for their collaboration with Dave O'Higgins which grew out of two concerts they played with Michael Brecker at the 2003 Molde International Jazz Festival.

COREY MWAMBA QUARTET
SUSUMI, The Wardwick, Derby

The heat is on at Susumi. In this new band some of the most exciting young
players in the midlands create a challenging setting for Corey Mwamba's
sensational vibraphone.

Since his inspired gig with Orphy Robinson at Vertigo last year Corey's star has continued to rise with a commission for The Arts Council's Decibel project and the formation of this new quartet

DERBY JAZZ WEEK 2004
Derby Jazz Week
is about Derby’s current jazz scene, some of the great jazz artists that have developed in and around Derby in recent years and the city’s excellent venues. Derby Jazz programmes at least a gig a month at Susumi, Derby Dance Centre and the Darwin Suite, and less often at the VoiceBox and the Assembly Rooms Great Hall.

Phil Robson and Dave O’Higgins both played their first dates for Derby Jazz when they were in their teens and still living in the city. Since then we have regularly supported them with gigs and commissions as they have gone on to international stardom. Alex Wilson's family had moved to Geneva before his musical talents emerged. But his parents still live locally and his mom attends the Thursday night salsa dance sessions at Derby Dance Centre. East Midlands Youth Jazz Orchestra is a forcing ground for local talent. Their top band features several outstanding soloists. Seymour Wright was inspired to start playing by seeing Evan Parker and many other great players at numerous Derby Jazz gigs before he moved on to become an international improviser. Belper based Peter Wraight started writing arrangements for Matthew Herbert through his work with Derby's Mantis Records.

Great jazz talent from a great local jazz scene.

Master drummer Billy Hart has worked extensively with Stan Getz, Charles Lloyd, Shirley Horn, McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock and many other great stars. James Genus has played bass for the likes of the Brecker Brothers, Roy Haynes, Horace Silver, Don Pullen. Great pedigrees, great jazz.

For this dance set Alex will be leading a ten-piece band featuring two singers, a three horn brass section and a three piece percussion unit.

Thursday night is the weekly Salsa night at Derby Dance Centre. Come and join us for a free beginner’s salsa dance class in Vertigo at 7:00 before the live set in the theatre, where we have taken out all of the seats to make more room for dancing.

ALEX WILSON with
THE EAST MIDLANDS YOUTH JAZZ ORCHESTRA
Darwin Suite, Assembly Rooms, Derby
Latin Jazz pianist, bandleader and composer Alex Wilson has already packed a lot into a short career. After a spell with Gary Crosby's Nu Troop he was with Courtney Pine for a year before leaving to launch his own bands and become a regular member of the Jazz Jamaica All Stars. In the month leading up to this concert he has led rehearsals with the East Midlands Youth Jazz Orchestra, who were given a 4 star review by the Guardian's jazz critic for a recent concert.

KEITH ROWE + JOHN TILBURY
WORLD BOOK Seymour Wright, Ross Lambert, John Lely
The Voicebox, Forman Street, Derby
Seymour Wright, who programmed this afternoon of improvised music, has lived and played in Bejing, Tokyo and London since he left Derby. He, Ross Lambert and John Lely take pages from "The World Book" as a stimulus for their abstract improvisation. John Tilbury and Keith Rowe are giants of the global improvised music scene. "Duo's for Doris", on the American Erstwhile label, was regarded by many as one of last year's best improvised music releases.

Saturday April 3rd 2004 8pm

MATTHEW HERBERT BIG BAND
This full on seventeen piece big band led by dance music genius Matthew Herbert (aka Herbert, Radioboy, Doctor Rockit) made its live debut at the Montreaux Jazz Festival in 2002. Since then they have played sell out concerts across Asia, the USA and Europe, including the London Jazz Festival, Barcelona’s Sonar Festival, last summer’s Big Chill and with Bjork at The Hollywood Bowl. Championed by Radio 1 DJ Gilles Peterson their first album "Goodbye Swingtime" has sold massively. On stage Herbert processes filtered sound, adding effects and sampling the musicians in real time.

The is a welcome home gig for the band's arranger and musical director Pete Wraight and lead saxophonist Dave O'Higgins.
