Two giants of UK modern jazz performing music from their new CD "Trace Elements". The programme features a sprinkling of Thelonious Monk, a piece by the late British jazz legend Stan Tracey and original compositions by Steve including the set of 3 pieces entitled 'Trace Elements', which pays tribute to the fact that when Tracey was nearing the end of his long career, he personally picked Steve to continue his legacy.
Steve Melling has most often been seen working with Clark Tracey, Alan Skidmore, Peter King and Claire Martin - recording albums with them. He has played with US musicians such as Elvin Jones, Benny Golson and James Moody and has appeared regularly at London's famous Ronnie Scott's with his trio. Steve now lives in Ripley and was particularly taken by The VoiceBox and its spectacularly good piano.
A generation older than Steve Art Themen became involved in the 1960's London blues scene, playing alongside Alexis Korner, Jack Bruce, Mick Jagger and Chuck Berry. He was a member of the Stan Tracey quartet for 20 years from 1976 regularely touring nationally and internationally with the quartet. He's also played and toured with American legends visiting the UK including Nat Adderley, Red Rodney, George Coleman and Al Haig.
