DERBY JAZZ supports and develops jazz in Derby

What is Derby Jazz?

DERBY JAZZ is a not for profit jazz development organization which has been continuously active since 1982 and became a Limited Company (No. 4946215) in 2003.

Since its inception Derby Jazz has worked in partnership with a number of organisations to promote performances and workshops, commission new music and develop local artists.

Our current partners include; Deda, Derby City Council, Derby LIVE, Derby Museums, Derbyshire Music Education Hub, EMJAZZ, Robert Ludlam Theatre, University of Derby and VoiceBox.

The quality of our programme of performances has been recognized by Jazz Services/Performing Rights Foundation Jazz Promoter Awards. Our current performance programme includes performances by some of the UKs leading jazz artists at Deda, Derby Silk Mill Museum, Robert Ludlam Theatre and VoiceBox.

Our current workshop programme includes separate series of regular workshops and summer schools for children (Rampage Brass Band) and adults (Playjazz). We also run workshops in schools.

We have commissioned many new pieces of music including major work from; Corey Mwamba, Graham Collier, John Bailey, Phil Robson. You can see films about these four commissions elsewhere on this website.

We are particularly proud of our work in supporting the developing careers of several artists from Derby. Phil Robson, Dave O’Higgins and Joshua Blackmore now have international careers. Corey Mwamba is gaining recognition nationally, as are Dave Hamblett, George Hogg and Ed Richardson. While Andrew Wood, Hugh Pascall, Jeff Brown, Marcus Joseph, Martyn Spencer, Matt Ratcliffe and Rosie Turton are all benefiting from current projects.

How does Derby Jazz work?

Derby Jazz is managed by a Board of Directors, all unpaid, who are responsible for all of its activities and for fundraising. Collectively the Directors have expertise in; jazz, education, fundraising, partnership working and business management. Derby Jazz is a core member of EMJAZZ and works in close partnership, sharing expertise and best practice, with the four other core members.
