Award-winning
saxophonist Tony Kofi is one of the finest players on the UK scene. His new
trio plays classic jazz standards rearranged to give that fresh sound of
today.
Born in Nottingham to West
African parents, the
playing career of saxophonist Tony Kofi began when he chanced upon a series of
jazz workshops run in Leicester. Tony was bitten by the jazz bug. He then
gained a scholarship at the legendary Berklee College of Music in Boston
USA. Returning to the UK, Tony was part of the UK's premier jazz group of the early 1990s - the Jazz Warriors and a vital part of Gary Crosby's Nu Troop.
Most
recently he’s been working internationally as the first UK member of David Murray’s
World Saxophone Quartet.
Corey Mwamba is Derby’s leading resident jazz musician. Born in
Derby, Corey is virtually self-taught in
music having made the decision to take up vibraphone in his late teens after
seeing a picture of Orphy Robinson in a book. He has worked frequently with Tony Kofi.
Corey is primarily known as a highly creative improviser
with a wide stylistic range. He was nominated for the 2008 BBC
Jazz Award for Innovation.
His most recent project Corey Mwamba/Dave Kane/Joshua
Blackmore has just finished a Jazz Services tour, including Derby, and
collected some great reviews.
