JAZZ WORKSHOPS
Derby Jazz has always placed a high priority on
jazz education projects. For Every Second we are staging a
rolling programme of informal workshops and mini sets in the
Assembly Rooms complex throughout both days. Artists from the main programme
bands will join these workshops.
EXHIBITIONS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH FORMAT - Derby's
International Photographic Festival
John Goto,
Visual-Artist-in-Residence

Professor John Goto will be visual
Artist-in-Residence at EVERY SECOND. John will be incorporating
images and texts from his "WEST END BLUES, Jazz Migrants in
London, 1919-74" series into animated stage sets for all the
concerts.
It will bring together the subject
of the ‘West End Blues’ series, which is an historical account
of jazz migrants in Britain, with the new generation of musicians
playing now, who are, of course, all steeped in the history of the
music. Courtney Pine, for example, is performing a work based on
the music of Sidney Bechet, whose visit to Britain in 1919 is
commemorated in the pictures.’
John has been an internationally
exhibiting artist since 1980 and Professor of Fine Art at
University of Derby since 2003. His narrative photo-digital images
draw on a huge range of intellectual and visual sources including
jazz and jazz history. All ticket holders can pick up a free copy
of John Goto's 'West End Blues' catalogue at the Festival.
